ELLIS ISLAND
ISLAND OF HOPE, ISLAND OF TEARS
How far would you travel to find a better life? What if the journey took weeks under difficult conditions? If you answered "Whatever it takes," you echo the feelings of the 12 million immigrants who passed through these now quiet halls from 1892 to 1954. For the vast majority of immigrants, Ellis Island truly was an "Island of Hope" - the first stop on their way to new opportunities and experiences in America. For the rest, it became the "Island of Tears" - a place where families were separated and individuals were denied entry into the United States.

ELLIS ISLAND NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IMMIGRATION
Ellis Island's Great Hall once had lines of immigrants speaking several different languages as they awaited processing. Following restoration in the 1980s, this building reopened as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, a symbol of this nation's immigrant heritage. Americans can trace their ancestry to the immigrants who crossed this island before dispersing to points all over the country.
