Music shapes the energy of your reception more than almost any other choice. The first decision is the big one: DJ or live band? Neither is better in every case. Here's how to choose based on your budget, guests and venue.

Choose a DJ if...
- You want specific songs exactly as recorded, from your first dance to the last song.
- Your guest list skews toward people who love to dance to current hits and throwbacks.
- Your budget is tight or you'd rather spend more on food or photos.
- Your venue is smaller, or the dance floor is close to dining tables.
Choose a band if...
- Live music is part of the experience you want guests to remember.
- You're hosting in a large ballroom where a band fills the room, like the grand ballrooms at The Rockleigh or Valley Regency.
- Your crowd spans generations and you want standards, Motown and current songs played live.
- You have the budget and the venue has the stage space and power.
The hybrid option
Many NJ couples choose both: a string trio or acoustic duo for the ceremony and cocktail hour, then a DJ for the reception. Others hire a band with a built-in DJ who plays during breaks. It's a good compromise if you want a live moment without paying for a full band all night.
The MC matters as much as the music
Whoever holds the microphone runs the timeline: announcing the wedding party, cueing toasts, the first dance and the cake cutting. A great MC keeps the night moving without being cheesy. Ask to see video of the entertainer actually emceeing, not just performing.
Check with your venue first
Before you book, ask your venue about:
- Load-in times and access (elevators, stairs, loading dock).
- Power and stage size, and whether a riser is provided.
- Sound limits or end times, especially at outdoor ceremonies and estates near homes.
- Preferred vendor lists. Some venues require entertainers to carry insurance.

- What's included: hours, ceremony sound, cocktail hour, lighting, microphones?
- What's the overtime rate?
- Can we give a must-play and do-not-play list?
- What do you wear, and what do you need from the venue (meals, a green room)?
- What's the backup plan if equipment fails or someone is sick?
- Can we see unedited video from a recent wedding?
