An outdoor ceremony under trees or in a garden is the dream for a lot of couples, and New Jersey has beautiful options from estate gardens to lakeside clubs. But outdoor weddings need more planning than indoor ones. Here's what to weigh and how to protect your day from the weather.
The pros
- Natural beauty. Gardens, lawns and water views need very little décor.
- Relaxed atmosphere. Guests tend to mingle more freely outside.
- Better light for photos, especially in the hour before sunset.
- Room to spread out for lawn games, a cocktail hour on the terrace or a larger ceremony.
The cons
- Weather. Rain, wind, heat and humidity are the biggest risks.
- Extra costs if you need a tent, flooring, heaters, fans, lighting or restrooms.
- Bugs in summer, especially near water and at dusk.
- Sound carries poorly outdoors, so you'll need microphones for vows.
- Accessibility for older guests on grass, gravel or hills.
The best months for an outdoor wedding in New Jersey
Late May through June and September through mid-October are the sweet spots: warm but rarely brutal, with less humidity than July and August. Early spring and late fall can be beautiful but chilly, especially after sunset. Check the sunset time for your date and schedule the ceremony so you're not squinting into the sun.
Always have a rain plan
Every outdoor wedding needs a backup that you'd be happy with, not just tolerate. Ask every venue:
- Where exactly does the ceremony move if it rains, and can I see that space?
- Who makes the call, and how many hours before the ceremony?
- Is there an extra fee to flip the room or put up a tent?
- Are tents available on site, and do they include sidewalls and heaters?
Viewing both the outdoor ceremony site and the indoor backup in a 360° virtual tour is the quickest way to judge whether the rain plan is one you'd be happy with.
All-inclusive venue vs. a blank-canvas site
A park or private property can be beautiful, but you'll supply nearly everything: tent, tables, power, restrooms, catering kitchen and permits. An estate venue with gardens gives you the outdoor setting plus a ballroom, kitchen and staff. In New Jersey, venues with outdoor ceremony settings include Park Chateau Estate & Gardens, The Estate at Florentine Gardens, The Park Savoy Estate and Brooklake Country Club with its lakeside setting.
Guest comfort checklist
- Water station or cold drinks at the ceremony in warm months.
- Fans, parasols or shade for afternoon ceremonies.
- Bug spray and sunscreen baskets.
- Blankets or pashminas for cooler evenings.
- A note on the invitation or website about outdoor footwear.
- Reserved shaded seats for older guests.
